Earlier this month, my family went to North Georgia to visit my brother and his family. We had an amazing time fishing at the lake in their backyard, playing on their zipline, visiting friends and oh yes, eating! There are hundreds of amazing food options in Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs. Many of the smaller towns have “city centers” with greenspace for the kids to play and local restaurants and breweries surrounding it. We visited several of these local “downtown” areas and had the best time! Downtown Alpharetta supplied us with one of our favorite nights complete with “Simon says” in the greenspace, playing on the climbing structures and dinner at Pure Taqueria. The food and margaritas were delicious and fresh, and the service was outstanding!
We all enjoyed the delightful restaurant fare, however, there was one meal that kept us talking all week long…and we didn’t find it at a restaurant. Introducing these Mediterranean Turkey Burgers coming to you straight from my sister-in-law’s kitchen! Our family doesn’t eat a lot of red meat, so I know my way around a turkey burger. But this version blew me out of the water! This burger is perfectly spiced and packed with red onion, spinach and feta. We topped them with an Easy Homemade Tzatziki Sauce and wow! Everyone was asking for seconds. It was no surprise that the first meal requested when we got back home was, you guessed it, Mediterranean Turkey Burgers.
Specific Carbohydrate Diet Legal
These burgers are a total crowd pleaser and perfect for a casual dinner party or an easy weeknight meal. Meals like this have also been a lifesaver for our family! We follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) to manage our daughter’s Crohn’s Disease. Traditional burger accompaniments like buns and melty American cheese are no-no’s on the diet. But these delicious burgers are so easily adaptable to the diet by simply:
Mediterranean Turkey Burgers can be prepared in advance and popped onto the grill or skillet when it’s time to eat. (I actually think advance preparation allows the spices to permeate the turkey and develops better flavor.) Go ahead and double or triple the recipe. These burgers are great leftover! If you end up with leftover tzatziki, try pairing it with these Baked Lamb Meatballs for another family favorite meal. Enjoy!
Look no further for tonight’s dinner inspiration! These delicious, packed with flavor, go-ahead-and-make-double, Mediterranean Turkey Burgers will no doubt be on your weekly meal rotation. Top them with homemade tzatziki and everyone will be asking for seconds!
1. Mix ground turkey and spices until evenly distributed.
2. Finely chop spinach and red onion.
3. Add spinach, red onion and feta to turkey and spices.
4. Form into patties. I like to weigh mine out to 1/4 pound to help with even cooking time.
5. Cook on a grill pan, grill or cast iron skillet for 5-6 minutes per side. (If using a skillet, melt a Tbsp butter in the skillet to prevent sticking.)
Hi Cynthia- thank you so much for your feedback and questions!! My family loves these burgers too!
I have not frozen these yet…they always get gobbled up at dinner. lol! I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t freeze them after cooking. Just make sure you vacuum seal them or put them in an airtight container.
I will say I do have experience and success freezing pre-cooked burgers. Great for meal prep and still lets you cook them fresh when you want them.
